Taking care of your upholstery products can go a long way in the lifespan of the item. Here a few simple tips to help care for your upholstered products:
- Flip and re-arrange cushions regularly for even wear.
- Keep upholstered product out of direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure may cause fabric to fade.
- Regularly vacuum or lightly brush the upholstered item to prevent accumulation of dust.
- If you get a stain or spot, clean it up immediately so it does not have a chance to set in.
- Follow the directions of the cleaning code listed on the fabric tag
Upholstery Cleaning Codes
The cleaning code for the fabric is typically found on the tag attached to the item. The most common place for this tag is under the cushions. If the cushions are not removable, then the tag may be underneath the item.
‘W’ – Code W stands for water based cleaner. Fabrics with this code are the easiest fabrics to clean. This is not the same as being machine washable though! This code means you can spot clean your fabric with a water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. You can use a brush to agitate the cleaner or even an upholstery attachment on a carpet cleaner. Be careful to avoid over-wetting the stain.
‘S’ – Code S stands for Solvents, and these fabrics must be dry cleaned only. You can spot clean these fabrics using a mild water-free solvent too.
‘WS’ – Water / Solvent Cleaner. Spot clean with a mild solvent, an upholstery shampoo or the foam from a mild detergent. When using a solvent or dry cleaning product, follow the instructions carefully and clean only in a well ventilated room.
‘X’ – Vacuum Only. Clean this fabric only by vacuuming or light brushing to prevent accumulation of dust and grime. Water based foam cleaners or solvent based cleaning agents of any kind may cause excessive shrinking, staining or distortion of the surface pile.
‘D’ – Dry Clean Only.
